Preview, prediction, what to watch for in Week 10

An inside look at Sunday’s Jets-Browns NFL Week 10 matchup at MetLife Stadium:

Marquee matchup

Browns DE Myles Garrett vs. Jets OTs Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou

In the postgame locker room in Cincinnati, a few Jets were looking at their phones, checking scores from other games when someone blurted out, “Myles Garrett had five sacks.” Players reacted with disbelief.

Garrett is the sort of player to make fellow NFL players marvel at his play. The superstar is second in the league with 10 sacks and leads a defense that is ranked second overall, allowing 276.9 yards per game.

Garrett needs two sacks to become the first player to reach 12 in six consecutive seasons, breaking a tie with Giants legend Lawrence Taylor.

Membou, a rookie, and Fashanu, a second-year player, have played well for the Jets this season, but this will be their biggest test, even bigger than Steelers star T.J. Watt in Week 1.

“Garrett needs a lot of attention and he’s just that type of player, but our guys are ready for that,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn said. “And listen, we had that with Watt, we had to give him a lot of attention, too, so it won’t be anything new for us and there’s going to be times where guys are going to be one-on-one, and when you are one-on-one, you got to win your battle.”

Four downs

QB question: Jets coach Aaron Glenn chose not to reveal who his starting quarterback would be for Sunday’s game again this week. It would be hard to see why he would bench Justin Fields after the performance he had in Cincinnati to get their first win.

Fields went 21-of-32 for 244 yards with a touchdown and orchestrated the 39-38 comeback win. Tyrod Taylor practiced this week and is healthy after a knee injury kept him sidelined against the Bengals.

While Glenn kept up the gamesmanship, the expectation is it will be Fields under center. Fields is hoping the Jets can build off their performance against the Bengals.

“We’ve been building on everything since Week 1,” Fields said. “We have a lot of games that were one score games and we just happened to be on the other side of that one score game this time. So, we know games are going to be like that each week, week-in and week-out, but I think the biggest thing is just building on that win and just taking that momentum into this week.”

Justin Field, who played well in the Jets’ win over the Bengals, is expected to be the starting quarterback Sunday against the Browns. AP

Pick up: The Jets remain the only team without an interception this season. It is a staggering streak. The eight-game drought is the second-longest streak to open a season, per ESPN stats. The most games without an interception to begin a season is 10, set by the 2017 Raiders.

The Jets traded away Sauce Gardner, who has just three career interceptions. Maybe that will spark something?

“No one is happy when you don’t have interceptions, because when you tip balls and things like that, you usually get them,” Glenn said. “Some of that is luck, we just haven’t had a chance to get those, but when you do get a chance to get your hands on the ball, we haven’t caught some of them either. So, it’s a little bit of everything combined.”

Woe away from home: The Browns enter this game on a 12-game road losing streak, the NFL’s longest losing streak away from home since the Jaguars went 18 games without a road win from 2019-22.

The last time the Browns won a road game was Week 2 of the 2024 season when they beat the Jaguars. They have lost their past seven road games by at least 13 points.

The Browns are not close to reaching the franchise record for road futility. Cleveland lost 25 straight road games from 2015-18.

New faces: The headlines on the Jets’ trades this week were about the players they shipped out, but they also got some players back in the deals.

The biggest additions could be at receiver where they got Adonai Mitchell from the Colts in the Gardner trade and John Metchie from the Eagles in the Michael Carter II trade.

The Jets have been searching for receivers opposite Garrett Wilson, who is returning from a knee injury this week. Can these new guys be those complements to Wilson? “They’ll definitely be a part of what we’ve got going on,” Glenn said.

Costello’s call

This could be an ugly game in the rain at MetLife Stadium.

These two offenses are bad. I think the Jets may get a boost after the big trades this week and rally together to quiet the naysayers.

Thank you

It won’t last, but they get a little post-trade bump and win an ugly one.
