Raiders had no intentions of letting up in drubbing of Chargers

Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce was asked during the Prime Video broadcast on Thursday night what his message to his team was at halftime.

“Press the gas pedal even harder,” he told Kaylee Hartung.

Las Vegas clearly got the message in what was a blowout win for the Raiders over the Chargers.

After putting up 42 first-half points, the Raiders added another 21 in the second half of a 63-21 drubbing of LA.

The win was the Raiders’ sixth win of the season and the 63 points they put up was a new team record.

The massive offensive night for the Raiders came just days after they failed to record any points in a 3-0 loss to the Vikings.

Vegas’ 42 first-half points were the most scored in the first two quarters of a game by any team coming off a shutout.

“It was incredible,” pass rusher Maxx Crosby told the Prime Video postgame show. “Obviously, last week, we didn’t score. [The offense] took it personal.”

“We knew at halftime what the record was,” Pierce said after the victory. “We want to be aggressive regardless of what the score was. If we had 21 or 10, we were going to be aggressive. That was our mindset.”

The Frankford Yellow Jackets had been the previous record holders with 34 first-half points in 1927 following a game they tied 0-0 with the Dayton Triangles.

Among the other historic accomplishments on Thursday was quarterback Aidan O’Connell throwing four touchdown passes in the first half.

It was the first time in 54 years that a Raiders quarterback had thrown at least four since 1969 when Daryle Lamonica had six in a half.

O’Connell finished the night completing 20-of-34 passes for 248 yards.

“We got our (butts) kicked,” Los Angeles running back Austin Ekeler said. “That’s all I got for you.”

“We just didn’t have a good game tonight,” Chargers coach Brandon Staley said. “We didn’t have it from the beginning to the end. It’s just one of those games where nothing went right for us. We got a good group of guys, but it was just one of those games where all three phases, the worst thing happened to us tonight. It’s a reflection of all of us.”

Zamir White led the Raiders in rushing yards with 68 on 17 carries and Davante Adams had 101 receiving yards on eight catches and had one of the four TD receptions for Vegas.

Tre Tucker had two touchdown catches and one of Michael Mayer’s four catches resulted in a touchdown.

The Raiders’ defense caused five turnovers and scored two of the team’s touchdowns in the “Thursday Night Football” win.

A 49-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Palmer ended the Raiders’ shutout in the third quarter and Alex Erickson and Quentin Johnston had the Chargers’ other two touchdown catches.

Easton Stick completed 23 of 32 passes for 257 yards while giving up an interception. He had three touchdown passes in the game.

“It shows the resilience we have as a group,” said Adams. “You can easily let something like that get in your head and throw off the rest of the season. To bounce back in just a short amount of time in front of you, that’s the type of response we’re going to need.”
