Rex Ryan roasts Mike McDaniel with nickname dig after Dolphins loss

Rex Ryan is calling something “soft,” and he’s not talking about feet.

The former Jets coach turned ESPN analyst didn’t hold back when talking about Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and his view of the team he coaches, describing the coach as “nerd boy” and taking a shot at the toughness of Miami.

Ryan called out the Dolphins after they lost 33-8 to the Colts on Sunday and questioned whether the players had respect for McDaniel.

“What the hell’s he talking about? You know, maybe he’s on a different level, McGenius Guy, whatever the hell he is. Nerd boy,” Ryan said during ESPN’s “Get Up” on Monday. “But anyway, their team has no respect for their coach. They play like that. They’re soft, I’m with you on that. Every part of their football team. They have tons of talent on this team. They don’t play with any passion.”

Ryan and McDaniel have different coaching styles, so it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see the former Jets and Bills coach react this way after an ugly loss for Miami.

The Dolphins had 211 yards of total offense, turned over the ball three times, while Daniel Jones, who started for the Colts on Sunday, had 272 yards, one touchdown pass and two rushing touchdowns.

McDaniel addressed the talk of being on the hot seat on Monday when he spoke with reporters.

“I don’t see this job void of pressure,” McDaniel said. “I don’t see entitlement in this job, but I think the most important thing is that I worry about doing my job. I think that’s what the team will get from me, for sure.”

The Dolphins will face the Patriots in Week 2 with a chance to redeem themselves after the ugly loss on Sunday.

“I think one of 17 is one of 17,” McDaniel said. “And if that type of game doesn’t show up ever again, that’s the only way you make it worth it. Because otherwise it’s just miserable for miserable sake.”
