Snowflake named as data partner for LA28 Olympics

Snowflake, a cloud-based data storage company, announced it will be the official data collaboration provider for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Team USA.

Through the three-year partnership, Snowflake will utilize its AI Data Cloud to enhance the planning and delivery of the Olympic Games, as well as collect data on fans and Team USA athletes’ training, health records and nutrition sources.

The company will also use its software architecture to collect data on fans “to build a complete profile of each fan and then engage with them in a personalized way,” whether the fan is watching from home, attending events or following on social channels.

“The LA28 Olympic and Paralympic stage offers an extraordinary opportunity to bring together data for truly meaningful impact and breakthroughs, and Snowflake’s technology is uniquely positioned to enable powerful data collaboration at scale,” Denise Persson, CMO at Snowflake, said in a statement.

“We are proud to be a trusted partner in what promises to be the most technologically advanced Olympic and Paralympic Games in history, using data collaboration powered by Snowflake’s ‘AI Data Cloud’ in the U.S. to help realize possibilities once unimaginable.”

THE LARGER TREND

Other companies partnering with sports associations to track players’ movements include Zebra Technologies, Catapult and Hawk-Eye Innovations.

Zebra Technologies partners with the National Football League (NFL) for player tracking.

It uses radio frequency identification (RFID) chips placed in the players’ shoulder pads to capture real-time speed, location and acceleration as well as “other metrics of every player for every play on every inch of the football field.”

Catapult also provides American football teams with video and data analysis software, including wearable GPS and inertial tracking devices.

Several NFL teams utilize its offerings during practice to monitor players’ performance, workload, biomechanics and movement, with the goal of reducing injury risk and improving performance.

Hawk-Eye Innovations, a Sony group company, partners with Major League Baseball (MLB) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) to provide tracking and analytics services to capture real-time, three-dimensional data on player and ball movements.

The company offers an optical tracking system and vision-processing technology to perform live ball and player tracking, including performance breakdowns, pitch execution, player spacing, pitcher/batter mechanics, batted-ball trajectory, defense metrics and off-ball movement.
