Rory McIlroy’s stunning divorce filing from wife Erica Stoll rocked the golf community Tuesday.
But as the Irish Independent reported in the wake of the news, there have been signs “that something was amiss in recent days.”
Stoll — who wed McIlroy in 2017 and has supported the Northern Irishman at golf tournaments over the years — was absent from Augusta National in April, when the 35-year-old finished tied for 22nd at the 2024 Masters.
A year prior, Stoll and McIlroy participated in the Par 3 Contest with their 3-year-old daughter, Poppy.
The Independent also cited McIlroy’s Mother’s Day tribute over the weekend, noting he honored his mother “but did not mention the mother of his daughter.”
McIlroy’s camp confirmed Tuesday to the Independent that a divorce had been filed and that he “will not be making any further comment.”
Further, the four-time major winner’s team “stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible,” according to the report.
McIlroy filed the docs in Florida on Monday, with the filing stating the union was “irretrievably broken.” He and Stoll also have a prenup.
He is currently in Louisville ahead of the 2024 PGA Championship, which tees off Thursday at Valhalla Golf Club.
McIlroy was spotted on the driving range Tuesday.
He is coming off two straight wins following victories at the Zurich Classic, where he was partnered with Shane Lowry, and at last weekend’s Wells Fargo Championship.
McIlroy is seeking his fifth major championship this weekend and his third PGA Championship win.
He won the tournament in 2012 and ’14 — the same year he was first linked to Stoll following his broken engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
McIlroy and Stoll wed three years later in a lavish ceremony at Ashford Castle in Ireland.
She was photographed supporting McIlroy at the Ryder Cup in Italy last fall.
