The U.S. Open was stopped tonight for a trespassing spectator scurrying across the court.
And then things went a bit squirrely.
In a second-round women’s doubles match on Saturday night on Court 5, Greet Minnen and Yanina Wickmayer squared off against Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva.
But the match was stopped when a squirrel ran across the back of the court, distracting players and serving as a potential hazard.
Cameras cut to the frantic squirrel who was trying to find his way out of the stadium, running quickly around the courtside seats until eventually exiting behind the bleachers.
“This match has seen a little bit of everything,” one commentator said.
Minnen and Wickmayer won the first set 7-6 (7) in a tiebreaker, but Siegemund and Zvonareva, stormed back to win the second and third sets 6-2, 6-0, respectively.
The squirrel could not been reached for comment.
