Christian McCaffrey’s mom needed an escape when the 49ers trailed the Lions by 17 points in the first half of the NFC Championship game.
When reflecting on last month’s NFC title game, McCaffrey’s mom, Lisa, revealed she “started bawling” in a private bathroom before San Francisco rallied for a 34-31 victory over Detroit to punch its ticket to Super Bowl 2024 in Las Vegas.
“I left where we were sitting and I went into the gender-neutral bathroom, because it was a private bathroom, shut the door, locked it and I just started bawling,” Lisa said on a new installment of the “Your Mom” podcast.
“It was awful. I was crying and people were coming in and out of our little suite and nobody could say the right thing, and it wasn’t them, it was just nobody could say the right thing, and I’m literally welling up, so I just run in, the bathroom happened to be open, I locked the door and cried for 10 minutes, and then we got back out there and preserved.”
McCaffrey, in his first full season with the 49ers after being traded by the Panthers in 2022, rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns in San Francisco’s thrilling comeback win to reach his first Super Bowl.
“That was the most emotional game I’ve ever witnessed in my life,” Lisa said.
Moments after the 49ers’ win, Lisa and husband Ed — a former NFL receiver who won a Super Bowl with the 49ers — joined their son on the field at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., where they also celebrated with the running back’s fiancée, model Olivia Culpo.
Culpo, 31, who announced her engagement to McCaffrey, 27, in April, revealed Friday she purchased an Allegiant Stadium suite for Lisa, who previously expressed the prices were too expensive.
Suites for the Super Bowl are expected to cost between $1.4 million and $2.5 million on average, according to the Suite Experience Group, which provides access to luxury suites at sporting events and concerts.
Super Bowl 2024 between the 49ers and the Chiefs gets underway at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.
