San Diego, CALIFORNIA, October 24, 2023 – Wiliot, the Internet of Things pioneer whose IoT platform is enabling trillions of “things” to gain intelligence, today announced that its ambient IoT Pixels and Visibility Platform have been named to TIME’s list of the Best Inventions of 2023.
The Wiliot ambient IoT Visibility Platform connects the digital and physical worlds using its IoT Pixels – stamp-sized, self-powered compute devices that cost only pennies. These IoT Pixels can attach to any “thing” to connect it to the internet; not just expensive things like cars, appliances, and shipping containers, but the things inside them: fruits, veggies, vaccine vials, clothes, crates, and just about everything else.
Once connected, products transmit real-time, item-level information about their location, temperature, humidity, and even carbon footprint – equipping businesses with the data they need to reduce their carbon emissions and enhance their supply chain sustainability.
To compile the list of 2023 best inventions, TIME solicited nominations from editors and correspondents around the world, and through an online application process, paying special attention to growing fields—such as AI, green energy, and sustainability. TIME then evaluated each contender on several key factors, including originality, efficacy, ambition, and impact.
“Inefficiencies and waste across supply chains have a significant impact on the planet,” said Antony Yousefian, Wiliot’s VP of Climate & Circularity. “Wiliot addresses these inefficiencies by creating an ambient IoT that brings intelligence and internet connectivity to every single ‘thing’ in the global supply chain, enabling products to transmit item-level information about their location, temperature, and carbon footprint. We are honored to have Wiliot and our breakthrough ambient IoT Pixels recognized by the editors of TIME.
With Wiliot, businesses are now equipped with the real-time carbon data for every single product in their supply chains, providing them a high-accuracy real-time view of their carbon footprint.
“What could once only be tracked roughly, in the aggregate, and on an annual basis, can now be tracked in-real-time, at the item-level, and with complete accuracy – a reality that will have a profound impact on planetary sustainability,” Yousefian emphasized.
Of the new list, TIME’s editors write: “The result is a list of 200 groundbreaking inventions (and 50 special mention inventions)—including the world’s most powerful supercomputer, a game-changing entertainment venue, and a new shape—that are changing how we live, work, play, and think about what’s possible.”
In addition to its real-time carbon footprinting, Wiliot’s ambient IoT Visibility Platform is also helping some of the world’s largest companies transition to fully automated, completely transparent supply chains that meet the challenges of omni-channel competition, reduce waste, improve food safety and quality, and enhance medicine efficacy.
Apparel companies and fashion brands are partnering with Wiliot to create circular economies for clothing products that extend their use and reuse, while pharmaceutical companies are leveraging Wiliot to ensure medicines remain at the appropriate temperature from the time they’re bottled to administered.
Furthermore, the Wiliot platform is also playing a major role in helping food producers and retailers comply with new FDA traceability rules. As part of the Food Safety and Modernization Act’s Rule 204 (FSMA 204), companies must track the safety of food products and share traceability data with the FDA and consumers.
Wiliot has been validated through a series of commercial wins and recognitions – including customer agreements, manufacturing partnerships, prestigious event invitations, and award wins.
Wiliot is now working with many of the world’s largest retail, food & beverage, and healthcare companies. To deliver on these massive orders, Wiliot has partnered with leading smart tag manufacturers – Avery Dennison, Identiv, and Tadbik – to enable Wiliot to scale to meet this exploding demand.
As evidence of its ability to impact climate change, Wiliot was invited to attend COP 27 to showcase its IoT Pixels and educate global leaders on the ways in which they’re creating sustainable supply chains.
Wiliot has been recognized by many of the world’s most prestigious organizations with various awards – including a VIP Award, issued by NRF; a GLOMO Award, issued by MWC; a Cool Vendor Award, issued by Gartner; and now a TIME Best Invention Award, issued by TIME.
About Wiliot:
Wiliot is an ambient IoT data carrier platform company. Our Visibility Platform connects the digital and physical worlds using IoT Pixels, battery-free smart tags that push data to the cloud in real-time without human intervention. Our platform exists within a fast-growing ambient IoT ecosystem. We have partners in that ecosystem that provide applications, tags, and edge devices.
Ambient IoT is an evolution of legacy IoT and RFID technologies with lower costs, end-to-end privacy and security, and the addition of new intelligence and sensing capabilities. It’s on a path to scaling to trillions thanks to telecommunications standards – Bluetooth, 5G Advanced, and 802.11 AMP.
Our mission is to make every single thing an agent of change, enabling ambient IoT by adding intelligence and automation to food, apparel, packaging, pharmaceuticals, and other products.
Connecting new categories of things through AI and the internet is transforming manufacturing, distribution, and product use to deliver on our vision: a minimum waste, full trust, perfectly timed world where people, profits, and the planet are aligned.
